Rules of Möbius Contest

Objectives

August Möbius Contest (further Contest) was founded to reveal the best scientific works on mathematics of undergraduate and graduate students and to give the authors financial support provided they continue their scientific work in Russia.

Nomination

The Contest is held in the following nominations:

Participants

  • The nomination "Undergraduates and graduates" is for full-time undergraduate, Master’s, and graduate students of any Russian university (and also full-time graduates of scientific research institutes), holding this position as of June 1 of the year when the contest is held. Winners (1st, 2nd and 3d grants) of the previous year cannot apply.
  • The nomination "Undergraduates" is only for full-time undergraduate and Master’s students holding this position as of June 1 of the year when the contest is held.

Undergraduate and Master’s students are allowed to submit their works in any but one nomination only on their choice..

Awards

  • The nomination "Undergraduates and graduates"
    Diploma of the Independent University of Moscow and a two-year grant:
    • 1st place – 20 000 roubles per month
    • 2nd place – 15 000 roubles per month
    • 3d place – 10 000 roubles per month
  • The nomination "Undergraduates"
    Diploma of the Independent University of Moscow and a one-year grant:
    • 1st place – 15 000 roubles per month
    • 2nd place – 10 000 roubles per month

Grants are paid monthly beginning from January. If a winner spends most part of the month abroad the grant is not paid. If a winner of the contest spends more than 7 months a year abroad his grant is cancelled.

In all scientific works sent for printing during the period of grant receipt a grant holder should indicate that the work was supported in part by the Möbius Contest Foundation for Young Scientists.

Jury

The jury of the contest consists of the chairman, academic secretary, founders of the contest and members (mathematicians representing the main areas of contemporary mathematics). The membership of the jury is approved by the Board of Trustees of the Foundation of young scientists " Möbius Contest" at the submission of the chairman of the jury.

The way of presentation and submission of works for the contest

A participant should submit one independent scientific work on mathematics (or mathematical physics written on mathematical level of rigor).
Joint works are not allowed. But grant-seekers can submit works specially written for Möbius Contest based on joint works including and showing their personal contribution in these works. References for parts of the work written by co-authors should be indicated.
The work should be submitted in two copies (it is desirable to attach floppy disk with the electronic version of the work in one of the ÒåÕ versions) to the following address:

The paper version of the application must be sent by ordinary mail (not registered mail nor special mail) or brought personally by the applicant to the address:

Besides it is necessary to send an electronic application to the e-mail address:

The application should include:

  • Electronic version of the work in two formats: TeX (obligatory) and one of two formats (pdf and PostScript).
  • The summary of the work (2-3 sentences) in a separate pdf or PostScript file. And also:
  • The work title in Russian and English.
  • Last, first and patronymic name of a participant.
  • Last, first and patronymic name of a scientific adviser.
  • Name of an educational institution, year for students and post-graduates.
  • Postal address (including zip code).
  • E-mail address.
  • Contact phone number.

Participant can (not obligatory) attach his scientific adviser’s review on the work.
The deadline for submission of works for the contest is September 20.

The order of holding the contest

The contest consists of two rounds and is held in September - December.

  • First round of the contest
    After the deadline the jury chooses works which will be admitted for the contest and directs the selected works to appropriate experts for review (åxperts can be members of the jury as well as external experts).
    Taking into consideration reviews and its personal opinion the jury chooses among the selected works:
    • 6-7 best works for the final round in the nomination "Undergraduates and graduates"
    • 4-5 best works for the final round in the nomination "Undergraduates"
    The decision of the jury is reached by consensus if possible; otherwise the chairman organizes rating voting.
  • The final round of the contest
    The final round is held separately on each nomination till November, 10.
    The final round is held in the conference hall of the Independent University of Moscow to the address: 119002, Moscow, Bolshoi Vlasjevsky pereulok, 11. All comers are welcomed.
    All the participants chosen by the jury during the first round are invited to take part in each of the final rounds (êoundtrip to Moscow is paid to nonresident finalists, if necessary).
    Finalists speak with a summary of their work in public and answer the questions of the jury. At the closed meeting the jury chooses winners in two nominations (exceptionally the jury can award none of the grants or award two first or two third grants). The jury also approves the participants taking:
    • 4 and 5 places among finalists in the nomination "Undergraduates and graduates"
    • 3 and 4 places among finalists in the nomination "Undergraduates"
    The decision of the jury is reached by consensus if possible; otherwise the chairman organizes rating voting.

The following materials are placed on the Web site:

  • Lists of works submitted to the contest
  • Lists of works reached the final
  • Full texts of works reached the final

Contest financing

The contest is funded by the nonprofit organization the Foundation of support of young scientists "Möbius contest".
